Ilya KovalchukNow that Ilya Kovalchuk has finally made up his mind, the rest of the NHL can return to summer hours. After months of speculation of where this year’s top free agent would land, Kovy brought the discussion full-circle as he chose to stay in New Jersey, which is exactly where many thought he would end up when free agency opened up after the playoffs. Several teams tried their best to acquire the Russian-born scorer; most of them being the Los Angeles Kings; but in the end it was New Jersey who won.

A.J. BurnettA.J. Burnett is having a tough season. It continued in his latest start on Saturday, when he went two innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. After the second, he disappeared into the clubhouse only to return with a cut above his right hand which he told Yankees manager Joe Girardi that he fell down stairs and ended up staying in the game for two more batters. Afterwards, he admitted he lied to the manager and said he really cut his hand when he slammed open double doors with a Plexiglas cover.

Burnett took ownership and apologized for lying to Girardi, but that may have had as much to do with maturity as it does his wearing a Yankees uniform. Frankly said, the Yankees will not tolerate that behavior. Things might have been different if he were still in Florida or Toronto or anywhere else for that matter, but he is a New York Yankee and excellence is not only the goal of everybody in the organization, it is also expected.

Burnett is no stranger to injuries, having landed on the DL almost a dozen times in his career, but none have been quite like this. Luckily for him, the cut is just above the wrist and not on his fingers. If so, he could really have had some difficulty holding the baseball. Regardless though, the two hitters he threw to after taking the mound in the third both reached base. At that point, Girardi came out with the hook.

It is hard to love a guy like Burnett. His dragon-like behavior is as temperamental as his arm and you never quite know what he’s going to be like both on the mound and off. Saturday was one of those double-bad days as his arm got him into trouble then his attitude made it worse before his arm completely derailed him. Burnett isn’t supposed to miss his next start, but there will be some hard looks going his way when he does take the mound again, and he’ll deserve every one of them.

Jeremy GuthrieTo say watching the Orioles play is about as much fun as watching grass grow is being mean to grass. The Orioles are horrendous. There number of players helping that team can be counted on one hand, and it’s a 25-man roster. An under .500 record is nothing new for the Charm City, but at 29-61, the Orioles have the worst record in baseball, which is definitely a demoralizing situation for the team to find itself in.

Bengie MolinaBengie Molina made baseball history on Friday in just his ninth game wearing a Texas Rangers uniform since being traded away from San Francisco last month. Molina hit for the cycle in an 8-4 Rangers win over the Boston Red Sox and became just the eighth player – and first catcher – in major league history to do so with a grand slam as part of his box score. With all of the good things that can already said about him, it’s hard to believe that his Friday night feat didn’t win over the Ranger fans.

Yunel EscobarYunel Escobar woke up on Wednesday morning wearing Atlanta Braves navy blue and scarlet. He went to sleep imagining himself in Toronto black, silver and blue. In a surprising five-man deal, Escobar and teammate Jo-Jo Reyes left the Braves system in return for Toronto’s power-hitting shortstop Alex Gonzalez and minor league prospects Tim Collins and Tyler Pastornicky. The former is known as a 5’7” strikeout pitcher and the latter an inexperienced shortstop with a high ceiling.

Jonathan ToewsThe season has yet to begin, but it already looks like the Chicago Blackhawks are mailing it in. Okay, maybe that is a little harsh, but since winning their first Stanley Cup since 1961 last month, the team has shipped a lot of key players out the door in order to make room under the salary cap. More than a half-dozen who drank from Lord Stanley’s mug have moved out of Chicago - willingly or unwillingly - and won’t be back for the 2010-11 season.

Evan MeekThe National League all-stars have finally broken the streak, and it didn’t even take all 34 roster players to do it. One of those left out of the game was Pirates reliever Evan Meek, who was not only the only Pittsburgh Pirate to be invited to California, but also the first non-closer Pirate to get the invite in over 70 years. Now Meek can say he is an all-star, but is still fully rested for Pittsburgh’s game against Houston on Friday.

Jose BautistaThe major league leader in home runs will be watching the Home Run Derby from the sidelines on Monday night. Jose Bautista, Toronto’s utility slugger, has 24 home runs at the break, won’t be swinging for the fences, but it’s not because of an injury or lack of willingness or anything of the like; he simply wasn’t asked to. MLB, in all their infinite wisdom, chose to overlook the unexpected slugger, and that fact has fans and players alike confused and upset.

David OrtizHas David Ortiz truly come back, or is he just going through a hot streak? His struggles have been well-documented since 2009 when his extended slump began, especially when he was dropped in the lineup for the first time in his career. In 2010, Ortiz has shown old signs of his form as he has blasted 19 home runs and has been selected as one of the American League All-Stars and will show up in Los Angeles for this week’s festivities.

Cliff LeeCliff Lee should just stop unpacking. With yesterday’s trade to Texas, Lee will now pitch for his fourth team in the last two seasons. The Mariners are clearly waving the white flag, which is obvious by the fact that they traded Lee before the break and even more so because they traded their best pitcher to a team in their own division. When it’s all said and done, 2010 will only be a disappointing season for the Mariners and their fans.
